To mark the centenary of the coming into being of the treasure that is now the Women’s Library, the Friends of the Women’s Library are holding a free one-day conference on 14 January. The venue is LSE’s Shaw Library. If you would like to attend please email anniversarywomenslibrary@protonmail.com
The speakers will include Kelly Bosomworth on the Six Point Group, Clara Jones on Virginia Woolf and the Adult Suffragists, Carmen Mangion on the religious women and feminist activism to be found in the Women’s Library collections, Caroline Derry on Fighting the sexual double standard and raising the age of consent, 1885-1922 and a discussion between Sally Alexander and Mary Evans on ‘What questions will the future ask of our past?’.
For my part, I’ve been invited to talk about my forthcoming book – The British Women’s Suffrage Movement in 100 Objects: a material history – to be published in paperback by Bloomsbury Academic in July. When making my selection of objects I was able to draw deeply from the marvellous Women’s Library collection as well as from other institutions and from private collections.
To those attending the conference, Bloomsbury is offering a 20% pre-order discount on the published price of £24.99.
